Kigali, 27th September 2011... On 21st September 2011, the British High Commission in Nairobi confirmed to Coca-Cola Central, East and West Africa (CEWA) that it had declined to issue visas to 38 COPA Coca-Cola players and 12 chaperones from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, Congo, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The COPA Coca-Cola teams were expected to represent their respective countries at the annual COPA Coca-Cola International Soccer Camp to be held in London this year.

Coca-Cola CEWA is disappointed by this decision but we assure the players, their guardians, media and the public that we are holding discussions with the British High Commission to request a favorable re-consideration.  We will, however, respect The Commission’s final decision.

In the meantime, Coca-Cola CEWA and its bottling partners in the affected countries are making every effort to contact the guardians and players, advising them of this unfortunate visa situation.  Additionally, we (Coca-Cola) are discussing and considering options that will provide the affected players with an alternative opportunity to experience world-class football as they sharpen their skills.  We will communicate these in due course.

COPA Coca-Cola is a notable national youth football tournament that seeks to support the development of grassroots youth talent. Every year, Coca-Cola gives hundreds of upcoming football stars an opportunity to refine their skills through inter-country competitions and exposure to world-class football.

In 2009 and 2010, the COPA Coca-Cola international camp and finals were held in South Africa, inspiring young players ahead of the historic 2010 South Africa FIFA World Cup™.  This year, Coca-Cola is partnering with Chelsea Football Club in a collaborate effort that will see the best of COPA Coca-Cola players from Africa train and hone their skills at one of the world’s finest football academies.
